Thursday, April 22, 1915 was a beautiful spring day in Belgium. The thousands of Canadian volunteer soldiers who had rushed to join the 'Colours' had easily weathered their first month of a so-far uneventful war in Europe. By the end of the weekend 2,000 of then would be dead after facing suffocating, poison gas and a numerically superior enemy. Canada would have paid its first 'bill' for the cause of King and Empire in the First World War. |
