"August 19, 1942 The Battle of Dieppe was the most controversial and highly publicized action of World War II. This book is an explosive and sure-to-be controversial reasessment of the Dieppe raid that saw 3,000 Canadian infantry killed, wounded or taken prisoner within a few short hours. Never satisfied with the traditional responses that attempted to explain what happened on that August day, the Whitakers returned to the scene of Dieppe and also to London, Washington and Ottawa in search of answers. Their research led them to top-secret documents and files protected -until now- by law. Their extensive re-examination involves the personalities of the leaders -Churchill and Roosevelt- and their Chiefs of Staff; the politics of Stalin; the temper of the times; the Allies' inability to strike at Hitler's Fortress Europe; and the planning and execution of the raid itself. Was Dieppe necessary? What was Churchill's real intent behind the operation? Did so much sacrifice have a payoff later in the war? Those who fought so couageously at Dieppe are a vital part of the history of Canada's military effort. They are owed long overdue answers to the reasons why. |
