The Memoir of a Canadian Junior Infantry Officer on Loan to the British Army for the
Liberation of Europe.
The author was a Canadian Army Infantry Officer, who
volunteered to serve with the British Army under the CANLOAN scheme for
the invasion of North West Europe.
He landed in Normandy on D+9 as a reinforcement
officer, and commanded a Medium Machinegun platoon of the 2nd Battalion,
The Middlesex Regiment (DCO), (nick-named The Die Hards), the Divisional Support
Battalion of the 3rd British Infantry Division, from 23 June 1944 until the end of the North
West European campaign, with time out in hospital in August 1944 after being wounded.
He stayed in Occupation in Germany after VE Day with the 2nd Bn, and later with the
1/7th Bn Middlesex in the 51st Highland Division.
It contains approximately 165 illustrations, many the author's own photographs,
documents pertaining to the CANLOAN Scheme, and others received during the
campaign. There are 14 maps, sections of original maps used by the author in battle,
in full scale, but printed in black and white. A 52-page Appendix describes the
Vickers machinegun, fire control methods, and the MG platoon organization and
equipment, with illustrations of the gun and its components, and some fire control
instruments and accessories.
